Shred Your Sensitive Papers - Free

Free Fall Shred-A-Thons - Orange County, Oct. 25th & 27th

Do you have confidential, sensitive, private papers and documents that need to be shredded?  Here is a great opportunity to dispose of old papers safely and for free!

Orange County Solid Waste Management and local law enforcement will host two free shred-a-thons in late October:
  • Thursday, October 25th at University Place behind the Silver Spot Teater of Willow Drive.  This is a park and walk-up service.
  • Saturday, October 27th at the recycling drop-off site behind Home Depot at Hampton Pointe in Hillsborough.  Drive through service available.
Both events are 10am to 2pm, and are for residents and small businesses in Orange County

The free shredding is limited to FOUR (4) boxes of documents.
Please only bring papers and documents that are truly confidential in nature including financial or medical records.  If a piece of bulk mail contains financial information such as credit card application forms those should be included.  Anything with your birth date, social security number, financial account number and information or any medical information are all considered private, confidential information that should be shredded for your protection.

A name and address alone do not constitute confidential information.  non-confidential paper such as magazines, bulk mail, envelopes, brochures, and folders should be recycled separately in blue carts or at regular recycling drop-off sites.

Incidental tape and staples are OK, but please NO plastics, metals, digital media, or other non-paper items.

The Peanut Butter & Jelly Campaign!

SCMA is proud to support the PB&J Campaign of the North Carolina Guadian ad Litem (GAL) Program.

Our social worker, Deanna Ayers, is a certified, volunteer Guardian ad Litem and we strongly support her important work with young people even as our business serves seniors.

A Guardian ad Litem represents the best interest of children in court.  Much of a GAL's work is confidential, so it's largely unknown outside of the court room.  This project is a way for the state and local GAL districts to engage the community, raise awareness of the GAL Program and provision our local Food Banks.

Here's how you can help:

The Durham Judicial District (14th) GAL Program is hosting a food drive to raise awareness and celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.  Donated peanut butter and jelly (in plastic containers, please) will be delivered to area food banks on January 21st.

You can drop off you PB & J donations at the following locations by January 18th:

Guardian ad Litem Office
Durham County Courthouse
510 S. Dillard St., 5th Floor
Durham, NC

The Age of Disruption 2016 Tour

"What if everything we think we know about aging is wrong?"

Picture
"For decades, the only dementia story we've heard is one of loss and despair.  But there is a new alternative story being told.  It is a story of joy and growth.  It is a story being told by people living with dementia, for people living with dementia, who want to disrupt the status quo and tell you that they are still here and their lives have meaning."

The Age of Disruption 2016 Tour is a modern day American Chautauqua movement barnstorming the country in a rock n’ roll tour bus to bring communities a new and highly disruptive understanding of aging.

Created by Dr. Bill Thomas, one of the most innovative and creative thinkers working in medicine today, the Tour brings a radical new approach — and conversation — to growth and aging. The 2016 tour features Disrupt Dementia, a community-based workshop, and Dr. Thomas’ signature “non-fiction theater” performance, Life’s Most Dangerous Game, featuring the unconventional pairing of a physician (Dr. Thomas) and a musician, Nate Silas Richardson.

Join SCMA & Dr. Bill Thomas and crew for a day of education, entertainment and inspiration.

2:30pm - 4:30pm  Workshop - "Disrupt Dementia"

7:00pm - 8:30pm  Non-Fiction Theatre - "Aging: Life's Most Dangerous Game"

The Friday Center, 100 Friday Center Dr., Chapel Hill, NC  27517

Starting just after 6am this past Friday morning, our team of senior care professionals, friends and a spouse made it all the way, 200 miles, from the Triangle to the coast!

It was a great and grueling experience.

And I am so proud to say that our team raised more than $5,000 for Alzheimers North Carolina!

Thanks to all our supporters and our race support team.
